Section D’ is now described as ‘The Closed Section of The Archives’It covers only the years 1929—1940 and contains Trotsky's correspondence with groups and members of the Fourth International and with other wellwishers and friends, his family correspondence, household papers, correspondence with publishers,documentation prepared for The Dewey Commission,papers of the Fourth International,& cAccording to Trotsky's wish,this Section of The Archives was not to be opened before the year 1980;but Harvard University gave the author access to it on the basis of a special authorization from Natalya Sedova, Trotsky's widow (In references to The Trotsky Archives at large,the open section of The Archives is meant)

The Closed Section of The Archives consists of fortyfive boxes,containing 309 folders with documents and correspondenceThus folders 1—16 contain Trotsky's family correspondence;folders 17—25,his household papers;folders 26—33,correspondence with pub lishers and literary agents; 34—35,documentation for the Mexican Countertrial;while Fourth International papers are in folders 36—40 The rest of the material is arranged according to countries,for instance,folders 65—70 contain Trotsky's correspondence concerning China;folders 90—121 refer to France;the German correspondence is in folders 122—126;the British 165—175;folders 214—286 contain correspondence with USA;folders 287—292 correspondence with the USSR,and 293—309 letters to and from Soviet citizens exiled from the USSRTo this Section of The Archives some papers were added by Trotsky's widow in 1953
